Russian, Korean & Malaysian Cloud Researchers Join Open Cirrus

The test bed, launched last July, has attracted more than 50 research projects so far

The Russian Academy of Sciences, South Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and MIMOS, a strategic R&D organization under Malaysia's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation are joining the HP-Intel-Yahoo open source cloud computing research test bed, Open Cirrus.

The announcement was made Monday at the first Open Cirrus Summit.

The test bed, launched last July, has attracted more than 50 research projects so far.

It was created to promote open collaboration among industry, academia and governments by removing the financial and logistical barriers to research in data-intensive, Internet-scale computing.

It simulates a real-life, global, Internet-scale environment and lets researchers test applications and measure the performance of infrastructure and services built to run on large-scale cloud systems.

There are multiple data centers involved.

The new recruits are expected to bring new approaches and new skill sets to the effort. They will also host additional test bed sites and expand Open Cirrus' global footprint to nine locations, the most geographically diverse cloud computing test bed currently available to researchers.

The new sites will contribute tools and best practices, and help benchmark and compare alternative approaches to service management at data center scale.

The Russian Academy of Sciences encompasses three organizations: the Institute for System Programming (ISP), which is supposed to do fundamental in system programming; the Joint SuperComputer Center (JSCC), which is supposed to port large arrays of biological data, nanotechnology, 3D modeling and other applications, to the cloud infrastructure; and the Russian Research Center Kurchatov Institute, which is supposed to explore how cloud computing is different from other technologies, and apply its techniques for large-scale data processing.

The Korean boys are supposed to do R&D on the management architecture and content retrieval of massive data sets.

And MIMOS is supposed to develop a national cloud computing platform to deploy services throughout Malaysia, and so will focus on software, security frameworks and mobile interactivity, as well as test new cloud tools.
