Amazon EC2 To Add Windows

Amazon said that its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) will start supporting Windows Server and SQL Server sometime this fall

Amazon said Wednesday that its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), currently limited to various Unix and Linux operating systems, will start supporting Windows Server and SQL Server sometime this fall, describing it as "one of our most requested features."

It's currently running a private beta of the widgetry.

The prospective environments will let users deploy ASP.NET web sites, high-performance clusters and media transcoding solutions, it said, while capitalizing on EC2's scalability, reliability and utility pricing.

In Windows' case, that pricing will be higher than Linux-based instances, because of the cost of Windows licenses, but Amazon hasn't said yet how much higher it will be. It's saving that news for when the service goes live.
