Microsoft Adds Visual Studio to .NET

Microsoft Adds Visual Studio to .NET

Microsoft announced that it is adding Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition to its list of .NET development tools. The software maker made the announcement at their VSLive! Conference. In releasing Visual Studio, small to medium-sized businesses are being targeted. The company wants to extend its reach among developers.

Jay Roxe, a Visual Studio project manager, said, "With Visual Studio 2005, we focused on how you create the right tool for each kind of developer. The product line now includes everything from Express, targeted at the novice, up to Team System, targeted at the corporate developer who wants to do integrated development across several large teams."

According to Microsoft, this edition of Visual Studio combines the simplicity of Visual Studio Express, geared towards the hobbyist, along with features for building Smart Client and Web Applications. Like the Express version, it does not include testing tools such as static analysis, unit testing or code coverage. It also does not offer project management or test case management.

The most likely candidate for use of Standard Edition will be the sole developer turning out line of business applications. It is not appropriate for teams, as it does not include collaboration tools or remote debugging features.

Visual Studio 2005 has two main components, an application development platform, and the .NET framework that integrates applications with the operating system and Web services. The Visual Studio development environment developers will use to create applications for Longhorn. In addition, it includes the .NET Framework, which serves as the enabling technology for running Longhorn applications and hooking them into the operating system.

Microsoft also made the Visual Studio 2005 Beta 1 Refresh available on MSDN. The latest version of Beta 1 includes Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation with collaboration and version control tools.

The full Visual Studio 2005 product line now includes the Visual Studio 2005 Express products, Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition, Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition, and Visual Studio 2005 Team System. Microsoft expects to release a beta version of the Standard Edition by the end of this year in advance of a RTM in the first half of 2005.

The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
