Worldwide forum kicks off with opening reception at Square headquarters, features two days of inspiring presentations from female senior executives, as well as opportunities to share knowledge and create communities

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., March 20, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Don't miss IEEE Women in Engineering's (WIE) inaugural International Leadership Conference, kicking off 1 May with an opening reception at Square headquarters in downtown San Francisco that is free to young women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

With a theme of "LEAD BEYOND – Developing Inspirational Women Who Change the World," the IEEE WIE leadership conference is a worldwide forum engaging and connecting women in engineering and technology that is expected to attract more than 300 women professionals. Register now at  www.ieee-wie-ilc.org.

"We need to break the stereotype and reverse the balance of women in STEM and, specifically, women in leadership in STEM," said Nita Patel, 2014 IEEE WIE International Chair and Systems and Software Engineering Manager at L-3 Communications. "This conference is an incredible opportunity for women to inspire one another and truly change the world through their leadership."

WIE's International Leadership Conference provides an opportunity for professional women from around the globe to create communities that fuel innovation, facilitate knowledge sharing, and learn through highly interactive sessions designed to foster discussion and collaboration.

The conference features two full days of inspiring presentations from dozens of high-level female senior executives, including:

  • Diane Bryant, Senior Vice President at Intel,
  • Liz Centoni, Vice President and General Manager at Cisco,
  • Jaya Kolhatkar, Vice President of Engineering at Walmart Labs,
  • Vanessa Slavich from Square, and
  • Seeta Hariharan, Vice President at Tata Consultancy.

Although women make up slightly more than 50 percent of the world's population, women are chronically under-represented in STEM fields (around 11 percent for electrical engineering and 18 percent in computer science). Fewer than 24 percent of senior management globally is female, and even lower in technology companies.

Topics for the two-day event are:

  • Inspiration– Top women executives share advice, anecdotes, and career advice on becoming a technical executive, starting your entrepreneurial journey, pursuing an MBA, becoming a thought leader, or building and selling your business.
  • Empowerment– Enabling action, leaders will share thoughts on sponsors and mentors, leading in an innovation organization, defining success, developing confidence, and leading forward.
  • Enjoyment– Experts will explore work/life balance, helping attendees understand how to take charge of their careers, build meaningful relationships, share personal confessions, and create financial stability.
  • Engagement– Through active engagement, leaders will offer instruction on time management, mentoring, staying inspired, and understanding their personal strengths.

The pre-conference reception at Square headquarters is free to all young women interested in learning more about science and engineering, and to women interested in connecting with the next generation of STEM leaders.

There are several IoTs: the Industrial Internet, Consumer Wearables, Wearables and Healthcare, Supply Chains, and the movement toward Smart Grids, Cities, Regions, and Nations. There are competing communications standards every step of the way, a bewildering array of sensors and devices, and an entire world of competing data analytics platforms. To some this appears to be chaos. In this power panel at @ThingsExpo, moderated by Conference Chair Roger Strukhoff, Bradley Holt, Developer Advocate a...
Cognitive Computing is becoming the foundation for a new generation of solutions that have the potential to transform business. Unlike traditional approaches to building solutions, a cognitive computing approach allows the data to help determine the way applications are designed. This contrasts with conventional software development that begins with defining logic based on the current way a business operates. In her session at 18th Cloud Expo, Judith S. Hurwitz, President and CEO of Hurwitz & ...
In his general session at 18th Cloud Expo, Lee Atchison, Principal Cloud Architect and Advocate at New Relic, discussed cloud as a ‘better data center’ and how it adds new capacity (faster) and improves application availability (redundancy). The cloud is a ‘Dynamic Tool for Dynamic Apps’ and resource allocation is an integral part of your application architecture, so use only the resources you need and allocate /de-allocate resources on the fly.
A strange thing is happening along the way to the Internet of Things, namely far too many devices to work with and manage. It has become clear that we'll need much higher efficiency user experiences that can allow us to more easily and scalably work with the thousands of devices that will soon be in each of our lives. Enter the conversational interface revolution, combining bots we can literally talk with, gesture to, and even direct with our thoughts, with embedded artificial intelligence, wh...
