Winnipeg Hospital Selects Panacea by i3 Solutions to Deliver a 21st Century Patient Bedside Experience

Panacea by i3 Solutions is changing the hospital experience for patients,
delivering on-demand bedside entertainment options.

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 20, 2014 /CNW/ - i3 Solutions Inc., a two-time award-winner for best-in-class healthcare solutions, today announced that Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg has completed Phase One of their three-phase plan to equip more than 500 bedsides with Panacea, a state-of-the-art bedside entertainment experience for patients. Delivered by TELUS Health on a Barco platform, Panacea provides entertainment and patient education functions on demand through a simple and intuitive web interface.

Panacea offers a flexible patient bedside experience via a touchscreen monitor, delivering a wide range of services to improve the patient's hospital stay. The physical unit itself meets HSC's rigorous infection control standards, ensuring patient safety is maintained.

In the first phase of deployment, HSC has presented a combination of free and subscription entertainment options supplied right to the patient bedside. Free services include hospital information, patient education, games, books and radio. Television, phone, internet, movies, and other features are available for a modest fee; patients can simply and instantly self-activate.

"Approximately 40% of our patients are from outside of Winnipeg," said Gerald Mirecki, Divisional Director of Business and Corporate Services at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg. "The Panacea solution allows them to stay connected with loved ones back home, which typically has a positive emotional impact."

"The Panacea experience supports HSC's 'Patients First' approach," continued Gerald. "Patients and their families now have a variety of entertainment and communication options right at their bedside."

"Support of family and friends is essential to facilitating excellent care for our patients," said Monika Gawthrop, a Manager of Patient Care at HSC. "Our patients often do not live in Winnipeg, and as a result, may not have visitors while in hospital. I am now personally witnessing how the ability to remain connected can be key to optimal recovery, particularly with our long term patients. The ability of family and friends to encourage, support and promote hope for our patients any time of the day or night, no matter where they live, has made a positive impact."

One of the reasons HSC selected Panacea was that it was developed in Canada for a global market. i3's six year history developing and delivering healthcare solutions meant a strong understanding and commitment to the healthcare community. i3 Solutions 24/7 product support, local onsite resources and a sales partnership with TELUS Health - a leading health information and communications technology provider - rounded out the full offering.

"This is a great example of our i3 culture and business philosophy in action. We listen closely to our clients, then collaborate with them and trailblazing partners to solve common problems for healthcare," said Peter Christopoulos, Executive Director, i3 Solutions Inc. "Along with Barco and TELUS Health, Panacea is leveraging the full flexibility, extensibility and security of the Microsoft platform, including Windows 8. Delivering on Microsoft supports a forward-thinking architectural vision that will enable HSC to extend services for patients by taking advantage of new features and integration options while remaining efficient and affordable."

TechCrunch reported that "Berlin-based relayr, maker of the WunderBar, an Internet of Things (IoT) hardware dev kit which resembles a chunky chocolate bar, has closed a $2.3 million seed round, from unnamed U.S. and Switzerland-based investors. The startup had previously raised a €250,000 friend and family round, and had been on track to close a €500,000 seed earlier this year — but received a higher funding offer from a different set of investors, which is the $2.3M round it’s reporting."
The Industrial Internet revolution is now underway, enabled by connected machines and billions of devices that communicate and collaborate. The massive amounts of Big Data requiring real-time analysis is flooding legacy IT systems and giving way to cloud environments that can handle the unpredictable workloads. Yet many barriers remain until we can fully realize the opportunities and benefits from the convergence of machines and devices with Big Data and the cloud, including interoperability, data security and privacy.
