This is the third article in the series of articles about the trends among websites in Alexa ranking websites.

In our article about most popular webservers in Alexa we found out that Apache is the most popular webserver, with NginX following.  We thought this data was interesting and dug deeper into data to find out the domain, where NginX and Apache are popular. Take look.

If we look through Alexa’s data, by the way, derived from the HTTP header, we can find many different kinds of information. As with previous articles about Alexa, this one tries to briefly introduce the top level domains and their behavior in Alexa. So, the most popular top level domain names are the following:  COM, NET, ORG and RU. It’s interesting that the fourth “winner’s” place goes to RU. Here is a visualization of the facts:

RU and ORG stand side by side and have shares of 3.32% and 3.36% respectively; the difference is not so significant.

Of course, the awarded winner is COM, with a share of almost 57% of websites in Alexa.  In 2012, although CN surpassed both NET and DE to become the second most registered domain in the world, it now shows an unpretentious share in Alexa of merely 2%.

But the story is still evolving; let’s do a bit of research into the web servers running under the mentioned domain names. Each of the top level domain names has its own favorite web server software, as shown here:

COM holds the most significant share in Alexa. It differs from the others not only by its share but also by web server performance. Under the COM top domain, the most used web server is Apache. The remaining two server software products take equal 20% portions. The ratio of Apache users to the other two is 3:1, meaning that there are three times as many Apache users as users of the other two. On the other hand, the second leading web server is Nginx, which keeps its share consistently at about 20%. In other words, the deviation is not very significant. Actually, only Apache has a slight deviation; the insight to this is that its popularity is due to a diverse set of users.

So, the statistics show up several short term situations, and help to compare and highlight discernible differences in behavior. Among the many colorful charts, there is a wealth of interesting information for all of us.
