DTS, Inc. (NASDAQ:DTSI), a leader in high-definition audio solutions and audio enhancement technologies, announced today that DTS-HD® is now supported in Microsoft’s IIS Media Services and Smooth Streaming platform. DTS-HD is now available and ready for immediate implementation into connected devices, online ecosystems and infrastructure partners that utilize Microsoft’s Smooth Streaming platform.
“Smooth Streaming brings a high quality viewing experience to consumers across a broad range of connected devices, from PCs and tablets to connected TVs and set top boxes,” said John Deutscher, principal program manager, Windows Azure Media Services. “We are excited to be supporting DTS’ premium audio technologies in the Smooth Streaming ecosystem.”
There are tens of millions of consumer electronics devices with both DTS and Smooth Streaming functionality that up until now have not been capable of combining the two technologies to stream media with immersive DTS sound. Moving forward, the collaboration with Microsoft will enable a vast and growing number of consumer electronics products to stream in DTS, allowing consumers to enjoy their streaming content with the same high-impact DTS surround sound that can be found on optical media formats, such as Blu-ray.
“We are pleased to be working with Microsoft to deploy our advanced audio solutions into the Smooth Streaming ecosystem,” said Mark Johnson, vice president, streaming and media solutions at DTS. “Smooth Streaming is one of the most widely used platforms for the digital transmission of premium content to connected devices, and now with support for DTS audio solutions, streaming services that utilize the platform can begin to offer a highly differentiated, immersive entertainment experience that complements their video content with high-quality DTS surround sound.”
Infrastructure partners, including those in charge of content preparation and distribution tools, will also be implementing DTS in Smooth Streaming functionality, which will enable tens of thousands of premium content titles to stream in DTS surround sound.
