APIdays will take place on December 3 & 4, 2012 in Paris. It will be Europe’s first international event on APIs and will include a series of conferences, workshops and discussions. It is organised by faberNovel and WebShell in partnership with EPITA and LAYER7. APIdays is sponsored by Paris Region Economic Development Agency and salesforce.com.
This event will also mark the publication of the “API-Driven Company” white paper which sees the company as a structure made of bricks organised around its core business. Thanks to APIs, these bricks can evolve independently of one another without disturbing the entire organisation.
Almost 8,000 APIs have been developed in a year, which is equivalent to a 100% growth rate, a figure that illustrates the area’s exponential requirements. The Gartner audit firm predicts that 75% of companies on the Fortune 1000 list will have an API by 2014.
What will the impact be for the public sector?
APIs follow the “open data” approach that is already under way in many authorities and aims to release public data with the goal of making things more transparent for citizens and constituents.
It is here that APIs demonstrate their advantage because – for example - they enable the data:
- to be directly integrated into an operational interface and to be designated for re-use by developers, companies and start-ups
- to keep in contact with data re-users thanks to user accounts and the daily monitoring of data usage to improvement management of the returns on the investment of the open data approach
The following will be present at the APIdays to illustrate the
way they implement APIs:
ETALAB
for the opening up of public data, SNCF
(the French national rail operator) with its open data approach, the Open
datasoft platform for converting open data into APIs that can be
used directly by developers, Openstreetmap,
the free and collaborative open data map, Cap
Digital, the business cluster for digital content and services, on
the subject of “how to conceive the government as a platform thanks
to APIs”.
There will also be speakers from more than a dozen different countries as well as major companies such as Dassault Systèmes Exalead, Orange, SNCF, Capgemini, Microsoft France and others.
