LoadMasters from KEMP increase performance and high availability for mission-critical Microsoft applications
27 November 2012 - North Wales Police (NWP) has replaced its legacy Windows Network Load Balancing software with two KEMP LoadMaster3600 appliances to increase the performance and high availability of its mission-critical Microsoft Exchange 2010, Lync and SharePoint applications. The new KEMP server load balancers deliver a faster, more reliable user experience for its 1,500 police men and women, 160 community support officers and over 900 office workers from Wrexham to the Isle of Anglesey.
NWP had migrated to MS Exchange 2010 when it was launched and was one of the first police forces in the UK to deploy Microsoft SharePoint and use the MS Lync platform for managing unified communications; but it had experienced problems when using Windows Network Load Balancing (WNLB) software. "Despite its popularity, there are some limitations to using WNLB for MS Exchange 2010," explained Andy Cunnah, Innovation and Business Development Manager from NWP.
The KEMP LoadMaster 3600 is an advanced application delivery controller with Layer 7 content switching that intelligently and efficiently distributes user traffic across multiple web and application servers to deliver a great end user experience and high availability. If a server becomes inaccessible, the balancer will take it off-line and automatically re-route and reconnect users to other functioning servers to guarantee application uptime.
The KEMP LoadMaster appliances were installed by System Professional, the UK-based KEMP Centre channel partner.
"Ultimately, the KEMP LoadMaster technology was fit for purpose and a fully accredited Microsoft solution," says Cunnah. "KEMP and System Professional were chosen based on their ability to deliver what we needed with an attractive pricing model and first class support. The installation was a very smooth transition and the LoadMaster appliances have delivered excellent performance and value for money."
NWP is looking to expand the use of its KEMP LoadMasters for additional core line of business applications.
