Bringing new hope to people with communications disorders, Mozzaz Corporation announces the release of TalkingTILES, a new Augmentative and Alternative Communication ('AAC') mobile app aimed at helping people with a speech or language disorder better express their thoughts, wants, needs and ideas. The app was announced at the recent 2012 ASHA Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.
According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), communication disorders are among the most common disabilities in the United States. Several studies show that 8-12 people per 1,000 experience severe communication impairments requiring AAC (ASHA 2008 AAC Report). AAC solutions have been in use for over three decades, with options ranging from manual picture-symbol boards to hardware based voice output devices.
Created in partnership with researchers, practitioners and families, TalkingTILES is breaking new ground in Assistive Communication Technology. It offers people with communication disorders as well as their educators, therapists, and parents maximum flexibility, balanced by ease-of-use and universal mobile access. With access to a vast library of more than 50,000 symbols and words in over 30 different languages, accents and voices, TalkingTILES can be customized and personalized to meet the communication needs of a wide variety of speech impaired individuals; including people with autism, ALS, cerebral palsy, stroke, aphasia and other traumatic brain injuries.
"We loved how easy it was to program the speech pages in TalkingTILES and how quickly our son learned to use it for communication," says Tracy Liscumb, mother of an 8 year old non-verbal autistic son. "His frustration levels just dropped as he found a way to communicate his needs."
Clinical support teams such as therapists, educators and caregivers for special needs individuals can program TalkingTILES content and share data remotely from their own device to their client's device through Cloud-based remote synchronization; resulting in an efficient and flexible way of managing speech and communication therapy collaboration across a support team.
"The fact that I can use my own laptop to program my client's TalkingTILES speech pages and then have them remotely sync to their personal device is a big time saver for my clients and my therapy team," says Dana Sahian, Speech Language Pathologist. "I can focus my time on actual therapy with the client as opposed to programming their iPad."
"We are very excited to bring this technology to market with TalkingTILES. Our mission is to make Assistive Technology affordable, accessible and adaptable to anyone and everyone. Individuals should have a choice in the type of device they wish to use, and TalkingTILES provides the most flexibility of any solution on the market today," says Sammy Wahab, CEO of Mozzaz. "With our launch today, we are releasing the iOS and Android versions, to be followed by Microsoft Windows 8 and BlackBerry versions in the coming months."
