SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- (Marketwire) -- 11/16/12 -- SUPERCOMPUTING 12 (SC12) - GreenButton, the leading provider of compute intensive and integrated on-demand cloud solutions, today announced the producers of New Zealand's latest Sci-Fi Mystery, "Eternity," selected RenderMan® on Demand to create incredible special effects for a fraction of the cost. RenderMan on Demand is a cloud rendering service created by Pixar Animation Studios and developed in collaboration with GreenButton and Microsoft.
In the process of filming, director, Alex Galvin, wanted the computer-generated imagery (CGI) for the scenes filmed in Hong Kong to look more futuristic. Visual effects supervisor, Tony St. George, added the needed special effects but the editing team was pushing to make the deadline for the 2012 Saint Tropez Antipodes Film Festival, just two weeks away. With time running short, executive producer Brendon King made the strategic decision to leverage GreenButton and the RenderMan on Demand solution in order to render these key scenes at crucial speed.
"This is the type of technology that small studios like ours have been looking for," said Brendon King, director of Creative Coast Limited, and executive producer of "Eternity." "The On-Demand model gives us the ability to just pay for what we use, without the need to invest capital in expensive infrastructure and technical support. We intend on using RenderMan on Demand for future productions."
RenderMan on Demand runs on the Windows® Azure platform and enables both smaller and independent studios to leverage the cloud to render large scale motion picture productions, for a fraction of the cost; and unlike a traditional software license, it is purchased in core hours on a pay for use basis. The price includes rendering time, uploads, downloads, and storage charges, all in a single, easy to calculate price. Without this solution, Creative Coast Limited would have had its workstation machines offline solely dedicated to rendering just these shots. The effects were completed in 48 hours, and the movie was selected as a finalist for the Festival.
"The cloud has become a game changer for the media and entertainment industry," said Scott Houston, CEO of GreenButton. "Small movie studios have been limited by budgets and technology. Together with Pixar and Microsoft we have created a platform that evens the playing field, and we believe audiences will start seeing great things from previously handicapped productions companies."
