KANKAKEE, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 11/30/09 -- In the areas of joint replacement, orthopedic surgery, spine surgery and stroke treatment, Riverside Medical Center was the recipient of several Specialty Excellence awards, making it one of the top hospitals in Illinois.
From 2006 to 2008 HealthGrades, the administrator of the ranking, took on the daunting annual task of reading and analyzing the outcomes of over 40 million Medicare hospital records from over 5,000 hospitals across the United States. Of note, no given hospital can decline being rated and HealthGrades charges nothing for its ratings process, giving an impartial assessment of hospitals in the United States. Since the risk profiles of patients from hospital to hospital are not alone, the ranking system risk-adjusts the data, permitting for more accurate and fair comparisons.
As a part of the study, HealthGrades oversaw data and eventually based its finding on a series of patient outcomes that hospitals submit to the federal government, including complication and mortality rates. Of all the hospitals in Illinois, Riverside is well known for its joint replacement and spine surgery. Both these programs were found to be in the top five percent, with the stroke treatment and orthopedic services coming in the top 10 percent.
Riverside Medical Center, a southern Chicago suburbs hospital, continues to strengthen its reputation for delivering high-ranking, quality care to families seeking hospital services within the state of Illinois. The eight areas of service for which Riverside Medical Center was recognized include prostatectomy, critical care, cardiac, orthopedics, stroke care, gastrointestinal services, general services and vascular surgery.
For the fourth consecutive year Riverside Medical Center was the recipient of the Patient Safety Excellence Award, reflecting the high quality care and professionalism which is extended to each patient who walks through the door to Riverside's hospital in the Chicago area. Thomson Reuters, a leading provider for healthcare-related information and solutions, named Riverside Medical Center a 100 Top Hospital for the past two years.
