DevOps with a Purpose - It's About Your Applications
By Matthew Selheimer
Unless you’ve been living under the proverbial rock these days you have no
doubt heard about DevOps and the groundswell building around it. Today DevOps
is being defined, promoted, touted and discussed as the next game changer in
IT. Rather than argue about the best way to define DevOps in a general sense,
this article will focus on something hopefully more useful – how do you
determine what DevOps means for your organization?
A common goal cited for DevOps is to enable faster release and deployment
cycles by taking advantage of agile development methodologies; improved
collaboration between business stakeholders, application development and
operations teams; and automation tools. Beyond these elements, DevOps also
requires a cultural acceptance of the need to focus on the flow of work
DevOps with Purpose: It's About Your Tools!

This is Part Three in a four-part series. In Part One, I focused on the
critical first step of defining DevOps with a purpose by thinking about
DevOps in the context of your organization’s applications. In Part Two, I
provided four tips to fostering a DevOps culture in your organization.
By now you’ve hopefully noticed the emphasis on “your” in this series,
because, at the end of the day adopting DevOps is about your business, your
applications, and your culture. In this third part of the series, I’m going
to discuss ... (more)
Microsoft One Ups Google+ for Photos
Just got the latest update for the OneDrive app and saw the new tags section
that tries to classify photos automatically based on content.
Tags range from #building to #group. It is reasonably accurate too, though I
don’t take too kindly to baby photos being tagged #dog & #animal.
Either ways, good to see a feature like this make it to an app rather than
having a research lab project having its thunder stolen by a competitor’s
published app (Hyperlapse from Instagram did pretty much this).

The Internet of Things will be a real thing in 2015, many of the CIOs we hear
are having plans of at least a few pilot projects if not full-fledged
projects in that space for 2015. It will be clear that most of these will be
a green field initiatives as the tools, platforms and frameworks for IoT
projects are just evolving.
Now the biggest dilemma for CIOs which may boil down to CTOs too are, how do
choose the platforms for IoT Projects.
Option A: Build our own platform through a suite of Open Source tools Option
B: Go with trusted enterprise players and build around their offeri... (more)

High-performing enterprise Software Quality Assurance (SQA) teams validate systems that are ready for use - getting most actively involved as components integrate and form complete systems. These teams catch and report on defects, making sure the customer gets the best software possible. SQA teams have leveraged automation and virtualization to execute more thorough testing in less time - bringing Dev and Ops together, ensuring production readiness. Does the emergence of DevOps mean the end of E...

Docker offers a new, lightweight approach to application portability. Applications are shipped using a common container format and managed with a high-level API. Their processes run within isolated namespaces that abstract the operating environment independently of the distribution, versions, network setup, and other details of this environment. This "containerization" has often been nicknamed "the new virtualization." But containers are more than lightweight virtual machines. Beyond their small...

The Internet of Things is tied together with a thin strand that is known as time. Coincidentally, at the core of nearly all data analytics is a timestamp.
When working with time series data there are a few core principles that everyone should consider, especially across datasets where time is the common boundary.
In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Jim Scott, Director of Enterprise Strategy & Architecture at MapR Technologies, discussed single-value, geo-spatial, and log time series dat...
